Dogs Ease the Pain of Getting Junk and Bills

Some people come up with ideas in the shower, I come up with them while checking my mail. The building I live in has a separate room where residents can check their mail and the walls had nothing on them, no wall paper, no pictures, nothing! One day, it just hit me. I could hang pictures of dogs in here to liven up the place. I was already printing and framing dog photos for my studio, so why not do the same thing in the mail room?

Skyhouse Channelside has plenty of dogs and dog lovers so it seemed like a no brainer. I wrote up a quick email to management and they responded with. “We love the idea! We’re going to ask the owners.” It took a little while to hear back, but one of the leasing associates stopped me in the hall to tell me the project was a go, but they needed more details. I wrote up a proposal, created mockups of what the mail room would look like, outlined the cost of printing, framing and what would go to the Humane Society. I used to work for an apartment management company and we used local artists to decorate the walls, so I knew that this could be something viable.

A few weeks went by and I didn’t hear anything. I was worried that they weren’t going to approve my proposal. One night when I came home from work, someone stopped me in the hall again. They approved my proposal! I designed the flyer that night and an email was sent to the residents encouraging them to participate later that week.

Project Goals

My goal for the project is to raise a minimum of $2,000 for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and sign up other apartment buildings that want to turn their mail room into a gallery for charity.

So far I’ve raised just over $650 with the project, but there is plenty of wall space available for even more dogs and dog lovers to participate. It’s a great way to engage the residents, but to also raise money for homeless animals in need. Owners get their dog’s photo in the mail room, but they also get 5 digital photos from the photo shoot to either print themselves of share on social media. Getting bills in the mail stinks, but seeing cute dog photos while checking the mail doesn’t.
