Petunia, the mini pig, is currently in a foster home waiting for her forever family. She was surrendered to Suncoast Animal League and her original name was Piggy Azalea.
Not only is Petunia photogenic, but she is currently in training to become a therapy pig through the American Mini Pig Association. Her training includes being able to walk well on a harness, feel comfortable in large crowds, let people touch her all over her body, take treats gently, sit, go up and down stairs, go up and down ramps, listen/respond to wait and ring a bell.
Petunia will also give “hoof” similar to how a dog would give paw or shake. She also knows how to spin in a circle on command.
Petunia eats a big bowl of Romaine hearts, baby kale, sliced grape tomatoes, 1/2 a sliced cucumber, two chopped stalks of celery and a sprinkling of Sharp’s Mini Pig Food. She also plays with a wobble Kong filled with the rest of her mini pig food which promotes her natural rooting behavior. She also loved Justin’s peanut butter during her pet photo shoot. You can see a behind the scenes video on our Facebook page.
As a fun outdoor activity, Petunia gets pumpkin treats sprinkled in the yard which also promotes rooting. Rooting is a natural behavior for pigs where the pig uses their snout to push or nudge into something repeatedly.
Petunia still needs a home
It’s important to know that they can be very stubborn. They are like having a toddler that gets into everything. They are funny, silly, sweet, cute and VERY smart! They need to be mentally stimulated to be a well adjusted piggy. Petunia also gets along with dogs, but shouldn’t be left alone with them.
She’s currently being fostered and if you are interested in adopting her, please contact Suncoast Animal League at [email protected].
